Vasumathi was very lucky to have been initiated into this art at a very young age by her mother late Smt. Padma Seshadri, who was an accomplished singer and the disciple of the late Yageneswara Bhagavathar.

Subsequent to learning the art of music, Vasumathi further learnt the music from Smt. T. R. Balamani, who is a Guru of repute. T. R Balamani is the disciple of the legendary late Musiri Subramanya Iyer and Sr. T. K. Govinda Rao. Besides, Vasumathi has also learnt select items from Sri. Vairamangalam Laxminarayan and Alathur Sri. Panchapakesa Iyer - one of the brothers of the famous late “Alathur brothers”.

To enrich her "laya" in music and dance, Vasumathi has also learnt the art of Mridangam from late Trichi Sri. Raghava Iyer.
